Cmediated

cmediated is an adjective used to describe processes, interactions, or systems in which computers serve as the principal mediators between participants, components, or data sources. The term is a contraction of computer-mediated and is related to, but not synonymous with, computer-mediated communication (CMC).

In social science and information technology, cmediated interactions encompass activities conducted through digital platforms and software interfaces, including online collaboration, messaging, information seeking, and remote services. In computing and software engineering, cmediated architectures describe designs in which mediating software layers—such as middleware, service brokers, and application programming interfaces—coordinate user input with back-end resources and services.

Origins and usage vary by discipline; some authors use "cmediated" interchangeably with "computer-mediated," while others reserve "computer-mediated" for the explicit human-to-human communication context and use alternative terms for process mediation more broadly. The lowercase form "cmediated" is less common in formal writing and may appear as a stylistic variant in certain corpora.

Critics note that the term can be ambiguous without context, since "mediated" can refer to many layers of mediation. When clarity is needed, writers specify the mediation level (user interface-mediated, API-mediated, etc.) or use established terms such as computer-mediated communication, digital mediation, or human-computer interaction.
