ClSO4

ClSO4 is a chemical formula that is not associated with a single, widely recognized compound in mainstream inorganic chemistry. In literature it may appear as shorthand or as a designation for chlorosulfate–related species, but there is no consensus on a discrete molecule with the exact formula ClSO4 under standard conditions.

Interpretations of ClSO4 include: a chlorosulfate unit or anion, ClSO4−, analogous in concept to sulfate but with substitution by chlorine; a fragment or placeholder used in reaction schemes to indicate chlorosulfonyl or chlorosulfate functionality in more complex molecules; or a misprint or context-specific shorthand for other chlorine–sulfur–oxygen fragments such as chlorosulfonyl groups (–SO2Cl) or chlorosulfate esters (R–O–SO2Cl). None of these have a universal, independent identity as a neutral, isolable compound with formula ClSO4.

Because ClSO4 is not a standard, well-characterized species, there is limited reliable data on its properties, synthesis, or applications. In contexts where sulfur- and chlorine-containing reagents are discussed, related well-characterized classes include sulfate esters, chlorosulfonyl compounds, and chlorosulfuric acid (ClSO3H). Salts or derivatives that might be described using the ClSO4 notation would be expected to be highly reactive or moisture-sensitive, typical of chlorosulfonyl- or chlorosulfate-bearing reagents, and would require appropriate handling.
