Ckerrokset

Ckerrokset is a term used in speculative design and science fiction to describe a proposed system of layered, interconnected spaces that function as a single urban environment beneath the surface. The coinage resembles Finnish kerrokset (floors), and its linguistic origin is unclear; there is no widely accepted etymology.

First appearing in design fiction and discussions about underground urbanism in the 2010s, Ckerrokset is not a standardized architectural concept and has no real-world applications.

A typical concept emphasizes modular, stackable levels for housing, commerce, and public amenities; shared infrastructure such as power, water, and waste systems; and vertical circulation cores. Daylight or artificial light is provided by light shafts or skylights, while climate control and geothermal stabilization support energy efficiency.

As a speculative construct, Ckerrokset faces challenges regarding safety, maintenance, cost, and governance; there is no established regulatory framework, and real-world pilots are sparse.

The concept is used to explore urban density, resilience, and subterranean space in future-city narratives and academic discourse.
