Christmasseason

The Christmasseason refers to the annual period around Christmas Day, observed by many Christian communities and secular societies. It encompasses religious observances commemorating the birth of Jesus and a broader cultural festival characterized by seasonal customs, gift exchange, and communal celebrations that stretch across several weeks.

Timing and duration vary by tradition. In many Western countries the season begins in late November or early December with Advent preparations, Christmas markets, and lights, and runs through Christmas Day or through Epiphany on January 6. Some churches observe the Twelve Days of Christmas from December 25 to January 5, while others extend the season to Epiphany.

Common practices include decorating homes with Christmas trees and lights, exchanging gifts, sharing festive meals, and attending religious services such as Advent observances, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Mass, and carol singing. Many communities also engage in charitable acts, volunteering, and seasonal music and media productions.

Cultural variation is wide. In Orthodox Christian regions, Christmas may be celebrated on January 7. Some countries observe Boxing Day on December 26. Secular aspects, such as advertising, travel, and sport, are prominent in some settings, while others emphasize religious observance. The Christmasseason has deep historical roots in European traditions, including the development of the Christmas tree, Saint Nicholas, and various local customs.
