The chlorite group encompasses a series of phyllosilicate minerals that are commonly found in metamorphic and hydrothermal environments. These minerals crystallize in the monoclinic system and are characterized by their layered structure composed of sheets of silica tetrahedra sandwiched between layers of magnesium, iron, and aluminum hydroxide octahedra.

The general chemical formula for chlorite minerals can be expressed as (Mg,Fe,Al)6(Si,Al)4O10(OH)8, though specific compositions vary among the different species. The most common members of the group include clinochlore, chamosite, nimite, and pennantite, which differ primarily in their iron and magnesium content.

Chlorite minerals typically form in low to medium grade metamorphic rocks, particularly in pelitic schists and metabasalts. They also occur in hydrothermal veins and as alteration products of primary minerals like pyroxenes and amphiboles. The formation of chlorite is often associated with regional metamorphism and hydrothermal processes involving water-rich fluids.

These minerals exhibit a distinctive green to yellow-green color, though variations exist depending on iron content. Chlorites possess a perfect basal cleavage and display a pearly to dull luster. They are relatively soft, ranking between 2 and 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, and have a specific gravity ranging from 2.6 to 3.3.

In industrial applications, chlorite minerals are primarily used in the production of ceramics, where they serve as fluxing agents. Some varieties are also employed in the manufacture of paint and rubber products. Geologically, chlorite serves as an important indicator mineral for determining the metamorphic grade and fluid composition in rock formations.

The identification of chlorite minerals in thin section is facilitated by their characteristic optical properties, including strong pleochroism and distinctive interference colors under crossed polarizers. X-ray diffraction analysis is commonly employed for precise species determination due to the subtle differences in composition among various chlorite varieties.
