Chevalley

Chevalley is the surname most closely associated with Claude Chevalley, a French mathematician known for foundational work in algebraic groups, Lie algebras, and algebraic geometry. His research helped establish key structures and methods that shaped modern algebra.

Chevalley developed the Chevalley basis for complex semisimple Lie algebras, which provides a way to define these algebras over arbitrary fields and to construct integral forms. He also introduced Chevalley groups, finite groups of Lie type obtained by applying his construction to algebraic groups over finite fields. In addition, Chevalley co-authored the Chevalley–Warning theorem, addressing the number of solutions to polynomial equations over finite fields, and formulated the structure theorem for connected linear algebraic groups, clarifying how such groups decompose into simpler pieces.

Chevalley’s contributions have had a lasting influence on representation theory and the theory of algebraic groups.
