Chersonese, also known as Chersonesus or Chersonesus Taurica, was an ancient Greek city founded by colonists from Miletus in the 5th century BCE on the Crimean Peninsula. Situated near modern-day Sevastopol, it became a significant commercial and cultural center in the region for over a thousand years. The city's strategic location on the Black Sea coast facilitated trade with various peoples, including Scythians and Sarmatians, as well as with the Greek world and later the Roman Empire.
