Chelans
Chelans are a Native American people historically located in the central Washington region of the Pacific Northwest. Their traditional homeland centered around Lake Chelan and the Wenatchee and Chelan valleys, with communities along the lake’s shores and in nearby river corridors. They lived in small villages, engaged in fishing, hunting, and gathering, and participated in regional trade networks with neighboring groups such as the Wenatchi, Methow, and Colville peoples. The Chelan language, related to the broader Salishan family, is poorly documented in comparison with other regional languages.
Contact with European-American explorers and settlers intensified in the 19th century, bringing infectious diseases and land
Today, individuals of Chelan ancestry may be enrolled in or affiliated with several tribes in Washington state.
