Chatel

Châtel is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France. It is situated in the French Alps, in the Chablais area near the Swiss border, and forms part of the Portes du Soleil ski area.

Located at elevations ranging from roughly 1,000 to over 2,000 meters, the village serves as both a year-round alpine village and a popular ski resort, connected to Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets, and other resorts within the Portes du Soleil network.

Rising from medieval roots, the name Châtel comes from châtel, meaning castle or fortress. The settlement developed from farming in the mountains and began to grow as a tourist destination with the expansion of alpine skiing in the 20th century.

Today, the population is in the low thousands, and the economy relies heavily on tourism, hospitality, and related services. The village is known for its traditional wooden chalets, a historic church, and access to a wide range of winter and summer activities.

Access is by road, with regional bus connections to nearby towns such as Thonon-les-Bains and Evian-les-Bains. In winter, the Portes du Soleil lift network provides extensive piste access from Châtel.
