Chapaevsk
Chapaevsk is a city in Samara Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Bolshoy Irgiz River, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Samara. Its history is closely linked to the development of the oil industry. The city was founded in 1900 as the settlement of Ilyinka, primarily to serve the nearby oil fields. It was renamed Chapaevsk in 1929 in honor of Vasily Chapayev, a Red Army commander who was active in the region during the Russian Civil War. Chapaevsk gained city status in 1927. The primary economic activity for much of its history has been oil extraction and refining. The city also has enterprises in chemical production and machine building. Chapaevsk is connected by road and rail to other settlements in the Samara region. As of recent statistics, its population is in the tens of thousands. The city's layout reflects its industrial past, with distinct residential areas and industrial zones. It is situated in a steppe landscape characteristic of the Volga region.
