Chaoyangopterus

Chaoyangopterus is a genus of azhdarchid pterosaur, a type of flying reptile that lived during the Early Cretaceous period. Fossils of Chaoyangopterus have been discovered in the Jiufotang Formation of Liaoning Province, China. This formation is known for its exceptionally well-preserved feathered dinosaurs and other early Cretaceous fauna.

The type species, Chaoyangopterus zhengi, was described in 2002. It is known from a single partial skeleton that includes parts of the skull, neck vertebrae, and wing bones. Chaoyangopterus is characterized by its relatively long, slender neck and a narrow, pointed snout. Like other azhdarchids, it was likely a terrestrial hunter, feeding on small vertebrates such as lizards and mammals.

Its exact phylogenetic position within azhdarchids is still debated. Some studies suggest it is a basal member of the group, while others place it closer to more derived forms. The discovery of Chaoyangopterus provided valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of azhdarchid pterosaurs during the Cretaceous, a period when these animals reached their peak diversity and size. Further discoveries are needed to fully understand its anatomy and ecological role.
