Centatropecem

Centatropecem is a Latin name that translates to "hundred-mile runner" in English. This term is associated with ancient Roman calendar systems, particularly with reference to the Roman dieresis system.

The Roman calendar was initially a lunisolar calendar, which based months on either lunar cycles or astronomical phenomena. However, to more accurately track the movement of celestial bodies, the Romans later introduced a solar calendar system. This shift aimed to align the calendar with the solar year, accounting for the time it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun.

Using the "hundred-mile runner" system, the traditional Roman solar year was divided into 100 "centuri" or "cursus centesimus," each containing 60 nundina or "days-nights." A nundina was a 2-day period, comprising a day and a night. This division resulted in the Roman solar calendar being divided into multiples of 2, similar to the lunar calendar. The Julian calendar would later reform the Roman solar calendar into the traditional modern calendar in use today.

This system to some extent anticipated the later creation of the Julian solar calendar. The 365.25 days year proposed was later refined in the Gregorian calendar to 365.2425 days. When the modern calendar's leap year conventions were established for solar calendar purposes, a remaining difference of 1:146000 from their Julian form remained.
