Celtransport

Celtransport refers to the set of cellular processes that control the movement of substances across the plasma membrane and between cellular compartments. While the term is not as common as “cell transport” in standard biology, it is used in some contexts to describe how cells exchange nutrients, ions, signaling molecules, and waste, maintaining internal order and homeostasis.

Transport can be broadly categorized into passive transport, active transport, and vesicular transport. Passive transport does not require cellular energy and moves substances down their electrochemical gradients. It includes simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion through carrier proteins or channels, and osmosis, the diffusion of water. Active transport requires energy, either from ATP or from ion gradients established by other pumps, to move substances against their gradients. Examples include the Na+/K+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPases, proton pumps in organelles, and secondary active transporters that use existing gradients to drive uptake of nutrients such as glucose via SGLT transporters.

Vesicular transport moves large or membrane-impermeable cargo via membrane-bound vesicles. Endocytosis Uptake methods include phagocytosis, pinocytosis, and receptor-mediated endocytosis, while exocytosis releases substances from the cell. Vesicle trafficking also coordinates movement between organelles, such as transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus.

The regulation of celtransport involves transporter and channel expression, membrane potential, and cellular energy status. It underpins physiology, pharmacology, and pathology, influencing nutrition, signaling, and disease processes where transporter function is altered.
