Caytonialeans are an extinct group of gymnosperms that flourished during the Mesozoic Era, particularly from the Late Triassic to the Late Cretaceous periods. They are notable for their distinctive reproductive structures, which include compound ovules and complex seed cones. Fossil evidence suggests they were widespread in what is now Europe, Asia, and North America, with some of the most well-preserved specimens found in the United Kingdom, particularly in the Wealden Group of southern England.

The name *Caytonialeans* derives from the genus *Caytonia*, first described by William Buckland in 1836. These plants were likely trees or shrubs, though their exact growth habits remain debated due to limited fossilized wood remains. Their reproductive biology is among the most studied aspects of their anatomy, as their ovules and cones exhibit features intermediate between those of modern gymnosperms and angiosperms, sparking discussions about evolutionary transitions in seed plants.

Key characteristics of caytonialeans include compound ovules, where multiple ovules are fused into a single structure, and the presence of a specialized integumentary nucellus, which may have facilitated early seed development. Some researchers propose that caytonialeans could represent an early lineage leading to modern angiosperms, though this remains controversial. Their pollen, often found in abundance in fossil records, is typically trilete, resembling that of some ferns, which may indicate a shared ancestral trait.

Fossilized caytonialean remains include leaves, stems, and reproductive organs, with the most iconic being the *Caytonia* seed cones. These structures are often preserved in fine-grained sediments, allowing detailed microscopic analysis.
