Campylobacterinfeksjon

Campylobacterinfeksjon is a common bacterial infection caused by bacteria of the genus Campylobacter. The most frequent culprit is Campylobacter jejuni. This infection typically affects the gastrointestinal tract. Transmission usually occurs through the consumption of undercooked poultry or other contaminated food products, as well as through contact with contaminated water or feces from infected animals.

Symptoms of Campylobacterinfeksjon often include diarrhea, which can be bloody, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms usually appear within two to five days after exposure to the bacteria and can last for about a week. In most healthy individuals, the infection resolves on its own without specific treatment. However, some individuals may require antibiotics, particularly if the infection is severe or if the person has a weakened immune system.

Diagnosis is typically made through stool sample testing. While the infection is usually self-limiting, complications can occur. These include irritable bowel syndrome, reactive arthritis, and in rare cases, Guillain-Barré syndrome, a serious neurological disorder. Prevention strategies focus on proper food handling, including thorough cooking of poultry and avoiding cross-contamination. Maintaining good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, is also crucial in preventing the spread of Campylobacter.
