CSFneuron refers to a type of neuron that is located within the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or is directly bathed by it. These neurons are distinct from neurons typically found within brain tissue or the spinal cord parenchyma. While the central nervous system is generally protected from direct contact with CSF by specialized barriers, certain neural populations are exceptions. The precise functions of CSFneurons are still an active area of research. Potential roles include sensing the biochemical composition of the CSF, responding to changes in pressure, or contributing to the regulation of CSF production or flow. Some studies suggest they may play a part in neuromodulation or in relaying information about the internal environment of the central nervous system to other neural circuits.
