CITESlisted

CITESlisted refers to species that are included on one of the appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). CITES is an international agreement between governments aimed at ensuring that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. There are three appendices under CITES, each offering different levels of protection. Appendix I species are the most endangered and international trade in these species is generally prohibited. Appendix II species are those that are not currently threatened with extinction but could become so if trade is not controlled. Appendix III species are those that are protected in at least one country and that country has asked other CITES members for assistance in controlling international trade.

When a species is CITESlisted, it means that its international trade is regulated according to the appendix on which it is placed. This regulation typically involves requiring permits or certificates for the import, export, or re-export of specimens. The purpose of this listing and regulation is to prevent overexploitation of wild populations and to promote sustainable use where appropriate. Enforcement of CITES regulations is the responsibility of individual member countries. Anyone involved in the international trade of CITESlisted species must be aware of and comply with these regulations to avoid penalties.
