CCR5estäjät

CCR5estäjät, also known as CCR5 antagonists or CCR5 blockers, are a class of drugs that inhibit the function of the CCR5 co-receptor. This co-receptor is primarily found on the surface of certain immune cells, particularly T-lymphocytes. Its main role is to facilitate the entry of certain viruses into these cells, most notably the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The CCR5 co-receptor acts as a docking site that HIV uses, in conjunction with the CD4 receptor, to gain access to host cells. Specifically, strains of HIV that utilize CCR5 for entry are known as R5-tropic viruses. By blocking the interaction between the HIV virus and the CCR5 co-receptor, CCR5estäjät prevent the virus from entering susceptible cells, thereby inhibiting viral replication and progression of the disease.

The primary therapeutic application of CCR5estäjät is in the treatment of HIV infection, particularly in individuals infected with R5-tropic HIV. They are typically used as part of a combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) regimen. Maraviroc is a well-known example of a CCR5estäjä that has been approved for clinical use. Its effectiveness is dependent on the tropism of the individual's HIV strain, which is determined through specific diagnostic tests. If an HIV strain is X4-tropic or dual-tropic, CCR5estäjät will not be effective. Potential side effects can vary, and monitoring by a healthcare professional is essential.
