A Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) camera is an electronic camera that uses an array of Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) to capture images. These cameras were widely used in amateur and professional photography during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

A CCD camera consists of an image sensor, an analog processing electronics, and a digital processing system. The image sensor is made up of a matrix of photodiodes, which convert light into electrical charges. These charges are then transferred to a charge storage register, where they are amplified and processed.

CCD cameras were known for their high sensitivity and wide dynamic range. They were often used in applications such as astronomy, geology, and surveillance. However, they had a number of limitations, including a limited lifespan due to radiation damage from light exposure, and a requirement for cooling to reduce dark current.

Despite these limitations, CCD cameras played an important role in the development of modern photography. Many of the early digital cameras used CCD technology, and it influenced the design of later generations of digital cameras.

In recent years, CCD cameras have largely been replaced by complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) cameras. CMOS cameras offer improved performance and longer lifespan, and have become the dominant technology in the camera market. However, CCD cameras are still used in certain niche applications, such as scientific imaging and industrial inspection.
