CBCs

CBCs is an acronym that can refer to several different concepts depending on the context. Common uses include a medical test called complete blood counts; a national public broadcaster known as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; and, in cryptography, the Cipher Block Chaining mode of operation. The plural form CBCs is used when referring to multiple instances of these items, rather than a single entity.

Complete blood counts (CBCs) are blood tests that measure components such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and related indices. They provide information on oxygen transport, immune status, and clotting potential. The test is performed on a blood sample drawn from a vein and is routinely used in screening, diagnosing conditions like anemia and infection, and monitoring treatment. Interpretation depends on age, sex, altitude, pregnancy status, and clinical context; abnormal results typically prompt further testing rather than a definitive diagnosis.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is Canada's national public broadcaster. It provides radio and television services and digital platforms in English, and its French-language counterpart, Radio-Canada, offers programming in French. The CBC operates national networks as well as regional outlets, producing a wide range of content including news, entertainment, and Canadian-focused programming. It is funded through government appropriations and public funding, with additional revenue from other sources, and plays a prominent role in Canada's media landscape.

In cryptography, CBC refers to Cipher Block Chaining, a mode of operation for block ciphers. In CBC mode, each plaintext block is XORed with the previous ciphertext block before encryption, requiring an initialization vector for the first block. While widely used historically, CBC has vulnerabilities in certain scenarios, and many modern systems favor authenticated encryption modes that provide both confidentiality and integrity.
