Butyrolactam

Butyrolactam refers to a class of cyclic amides with a five-membered ring structure. The most common and industrially significant member is 2-pyrrolidone, also known as gamma-butyrolactam. This compound is a colorless liquid with a weak amine-like odor. It is highly soluble in water and many organic solvents.

2-Pyrrolidone is a versatile chemical intermediate. It is primarily produced by the reaction of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) with ammonia. Its applications span various industries. It is a key precursor in the synthesis of N-vinylpyrrolidone, which is then polymerized to form polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). PVP has widespread uses as a binder, dispersant, and film-former in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and industrial applications.

Beyond PVP synthesis, 2-pyrrolidone itself serves as a solvent for polymers, resins, and in agricultural formulations. It is also utilized in the production of certain pharmaceuticals and as a component in some cleaning agents. The chemical properties of 2-pyrrolidone, including its polarity and ability to form hydrogen bonds, contribute to its effectiveness in these diverse roles.
