A business enterprise is an organized entity engaged in commercial, industrial, or professional activities with the aim of generating profit or delivering goods and services to customers. Enterprises may be privately held, publicly traded, or owned by governments or cooperatives. They vary in size from micro and small enterprises to large multinational corporations and state-owned entities.

Common forms include sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and cooperatives, each with distinct ownership, liability, and governance characteristics. A governance structure typically includes owners or shareholders, a management team, and, in larger firms, a board of directors that oversees strategy and major decisions.

Core functions span strategy, marketing, operations, finance, and human resources. Enterprises procure resources, produce or source goods and services, and distribute them through channels to customers. They rely on capital for investment, with funding arising from retained earnings, equity, debt, or public markets, sometimes supplemented by grants or subsidies in certain sectors.

Lifecycle stages range from startup through growth, maturity, and potential renewal or decline. Performance is assessed using metrics such as profitability, revenue growth, return on investment, cash flow, and productivity, as well as nonfinancial indicators like sustainability and customer satisfaction.

Enterprises operate within regulatory environments and must comply with laws on competition, taxation, labor, product safety, and environmental impact. In public policy and economic analysis, the term is used to study how enterprises affect employment, innovation, productivity, and economic growth.
