Burjatien is a historical region of Siberia named for the Buryat people, a Mongolic-speaking group living around the eastern shore of Lake Baikal. The core of Burjatien lies along the Baikal region, and its territory roughly corresponds to the modern Republic of Buryatia, a federal subject of the Russian Federation. The region is home to the Buryats, along with Russians and other ethnic groups; its largest city and traditional center is Ulan-Ude.
