Burgernet

Burgernet is a Dutch initiative that utilizes citizens to help emergency services respond more effectively. It operates through an opt-in SMS and app-based notification system. When a specific type of emergency occurs, such as a fire or a crime in progress, the police or fire department can send out alerts to registered Burgernet participants in the immediate vicinity. These alerts contain information about the situation and often include a description of a suspect or vehicle.

Participants are asked to keep an eye out for the described individual or vehicle and report any sightings to the emergency services via a dedicated phone number. The core principle is to increase the eyes and ears on the street, thereby improving the chances of locating suspects or finding critical evidence. Burgernet is not intended for citizens to intervene directly but rather to act as observers and information providers. The service is free to join and is widely used across the Netherlands by both police and fire departments to enhance public safety and aid in investigations.
