Buleleng

Buleleng is a regency (kabupaten) of Bali Province, Indonesia, located on the island’s northern coast. Its capital is Singaraja, which served as Bali’s colonial capital during the Dutch period. The regency encompasses a large portion of Bali’s northern hinterland and coastline.

Geographically, Buleleng stretches from the Bali Sea in the north to inland mountains in the south. It includes part of the West Bali National Park and the Menjangan Island marine reserve. Coastal areas are known for beaches such as Lovina and Pemuteran, while the interior features lush highlands, rivers, and diverse ecosystems.

Economy and tourism are major components of Buleleng’s development. Agriculture and fishing remain important, complemented by growing tourism focused on natural and cultural attractions. Visitors come for dolphin watching in Lovina, snorkeling and diving around Pemuteran and Menjangan Island, as well as waterfalls and scenic mountain landscapes in Munduk and surrounding areas.

Administration and people: Buleleng is divided into several districts (kecamatan) and villages, governed by a regent (bupati) and the regency government seated in Singaraja. The population is predominantly Balinese, with communities that maintain Bali’s religious and cultural traditions.

History and culture: The region has a long history within Bali, with Singaraja playing a central role during the colonial era. Today, Buleleng preserves a mix of traditional arts, temples, and ceremonies, alongside expanding infrastructure and tourism that link its rural areas to broader Bali.
