Buffertrinn

Buffertrinn is a Norwegian term used to describe a buffer stage or buffering step in a process, system, or reaction. The role of such a stage is to stabilize a variable—such as a voltage, pH, or data rate—by absorbing fluctuations and preventing them from propagating further.

In electronics, a buffertrinn refers to a buffer circuit placed between stages to isolate them and prevent loading effects. Common realizations include voltage followers or emitter followers, which raise input impedance, lower output impedance, and help preserve signal integrity when driving next stages or loads.

In chemistry and biochemistry, a buffertrinn describes a step in a buffering system that maintains pH by the reversible action of a weak acid and its conjugate base (or a weak base and its conjugate acid). In physiological contexts, buffer systems such as carbonic acid–bicarbonate or phosphate buffers act as successive buffering steps that resist pH changes during reactions or metabolism.

In environmental science and geochemistry, buffering capacity of water bodies or soils relies on buffertrinns where added acids or bases are neutralized by chemical species such as carbonate, bicarbonate, or phosphate.
