Bufferin

Bufferin is a brand name for a buffered form of aspirin, an over-the-counter analgesic and antipyretic. Buffered aspirin combines acetylsalicylic acid with buffering agents such as calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide to reduce gastric irritation associated with plain aspirin. Formulations and pack sizes vary by market.

It is used to relieve mild to moderate pain such as headaches, toothache, and muscle aches, and to lower fever. In some contexts, low-dose aspirin acts as an antiplatelet agent to reduce the risk of blood clots, a use that depends on medical guidance and local guidelines.

Aspirin works by irreversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), lowering prostaglandin synthesis; the antiplatelet effect is due to COX-1 inhibition in platelets.

Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal upset, heartburn, and, with higher doses or prolonged use, stomach ulcers and bleeding. Bufferin should be used with caution in people with a history of ulcers, gastritis, kidney disease, or bleeding disorders. Aspirin can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. Reye syndrome risk means it should not be given to children or teenagers with viral infections unless advised by a clinician. Interactions include anticoagulants, other NSAIDs, and alcohol.
