Buchach

Buchach is a city located in the Ternopil Oblast of western Ukraine. Situated on the Strypa River, a tributary of the Dniester, Buchach has a history that stretches back to at least the 14th century. It was granted Magdeburg rights in 1515, indicating its former importance as a significant urban center.

Historically, Buchach was part of the Kingdom of Poland and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. During this period, it developed into a notable trading hub. The city's architectural landscape bears witness to its diverse past, with remnants of its Polish and Austrian heritage visible in some buildings.

The town experienced periods of significant Jewish settlement, with a prominent Hasidic community flourishing there. The Buchach Yeshiva was a renowned center of Jewish learning. Unfortunately, like many other Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, Buchach suffered greatly during the Holocaust.

In the 20th century, Buchach came under Soviet rule and subsequently became part of independent Ukraine in 1991. Today, Buchach is a regional administrative center and a place of historical interest. Its picturesque setting and historical sites continue to attract visitors. The city's economy is primarily based on agriculture and local industry.
