Brutowerkuren refers to a set of practices and artistic expressions that emerged in Austria in the early 20th century. Primarily associated with the Viennese Actionists in the 1960s and 1970s, the term translates roughly to "brutal actions" or "brutal works." These actions often involved performance art, body art, and the use of shock tactics to challenge bourgeois morality, societal norms, and artistic conventions.

The Viennese Actionists, including figures like Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler, utilized their own bodies as a medium for their art. Their performances frequently incorporated self-harm, scatological elements, and politically charged imagery. The aim was to create an intense, visceral experience for both the performers and the audience, provoking strong emotional and intellectual responses. These actions were not merely for shock value but were intended as a critique of Austrian society's post-war repression and its lingering ties to Nazism.
