Brustabschnitt, also known as the thoracic segment or thorax segment, refers to a specific region of the human body situated between the neck and the abdomen. It comprises the thoracic vertebrae, ribs, and the associated musculature, blood vessels, nerves, and internal organs such as the lungs and heart. The thorax serves vital functions including protection of vital organs, support of the upper body, and facilitation of breathing.

Anatomically, the Brustabschnitt is bounded superiorly by the thoracic inlet, inferiorly by the diaphragm, anteriorly by the sternum, and posteriorly by the thoracic vertebrae. It contains twelve pairs of ribs, each attaching posteriorly to a thoracic vertebra, and anteriorly to the sternum via costal cartilage. The thoracic vertebrae are distinct from cervical and lumbar vertebrae, characterized by their longer spinous processes and articulation points for the ribs.
