Bromomethaan

Bromomethaan, also known as methyl bromide, is an organobromine compound with the chemical formula CH3Br. It is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure, and it has a faint, sweet odor. Bromomethaan is a volatile organic compound and is highly reactive. Historically, it was widely used as a fumigant for agricultural purposes, including the treatment of soil, grain, and timber to control pests and diseases. It was also employed as a refrigerant and a flame retardant.

However, due to its significant ozone-depleting properties, the production and use of bromomethaan have been largely phased out under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. While some critical uses, such as for quarantine and pre-shipment treatments, are still permitted under strict regulations, its widespread application has been discontinued in most parts of the world.

Bromomethaan is toxic and can cause severe health problems upon exposure, including damage to the central nervous system, respiratory system, and skin. It is also classified as a greenhouse gas, although its impact is less significant than its ozone-depleting potential. Due to its hazardous nature and environmental concerns, handling and disposal of bromomethaan require stringent safety precautions. Research continues to explore safer alternatives for its former applications.
