Bromine-releasing compounds are chemical substances that, under specific conditions, liberate elemental bromine (Br₂) or reactive bromine-containing species. These compounds are often employed as disinfectants and biocides in various applications due to the potent oxidizing and antimicrobial properties of bromine.

Common examples include N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), which is a versatile reagent in organic synthesis, often used for allylic and benzylic bromination. Other bromine-releasing agents are found in water treatment, such as 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH). BCDMH slowly releases both hypobromous acid (HOBr) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) when dissolved in water, providing effective disinfection for swimming pools, spas, and cooling towers. The release of bromine typically occurs through hydrolysis or reaction with oxidizing agents.

The efficacy of bromine-releasing compounds stems from the ability of hypobromous acid, the active species, to disrupt essential cellular functions in microorganisms. It oxidizes critical enzymes and cell wall components, leading to cell death. While effective, the handling and application of these compounds require care due to the corrosive and irritating nature of bromine and its derivatives. Safety precautions, including proper ventilation and personal protective equipment, are essential when working with bromine-releasing substances. Their use is regulated in many jurisdictions to ensure environmental and human safety.
