In contemporary Turkish, the official name of the country is Birleşik Krallık (United Kingdom). The word İngiltere denotes England specifically. Britanya can refer to the United Kingdom as a whole, though in formal writing it is more common to use Birleşik Krallık; in everyday language Britanya may also be used when the speaker means the broader British realm or historic contexts.

Historically, the British Empire is often described as Britanya İmparatorluğu in Turkish-language sources, especially in older or literary texts.
