Brisingamen

Brisingamen, Old Norse Brisingamen, translates as "fire-gleam necklace" and is a legendary necklace in Norse mythology associated with the goddess Freyja. Described as a superb gold torc or necklace, it is sometimes said to be set with amber or other gems, and is emblematic of Freyja's beauty, allure, wealth, and magical power. In the myths, the Brisingamen was crafted by four dwarven smiths—Alfrigg, Dvalin, Berling, and Grerr—for Freyja. The most common version adds that Freyja obtained or paid for it after spending a night with each smith, though this detail varies among sources.

As one of Freyja's most prized possessions, the Brisingamen is depicted as luminous and exceptionally crafted, and it reinforces her role as a goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and war. Its exact fate varies by tradition: some accounts portray it as worn by Freyja and inaccessible to others, while others recount its involvement in tales of deception and mischief among the gods; in some later traditions it is said to disappear at Ragnarok.

In modern times, Brisingamen has become a cultural symbol of Norse myth and appears in literature, art, and media inspired by Viking-age legends. It continues to be used to denote Freyja’s distinctive combination of beauty and power.
