Bridestealing

Bridestealing, also known as bride capture or bride kidnapping, refers to the practice of taking a woman against her will for the purpose of marriage. While often depicted in historical and fictional contexts, it has persisted in various forms in some parts of the world, though its prevalence and legal status vary significantly.

Historically, bridestealing was a method of marriage acquisition in some societies, particularly when formal marriage arrangements were difficult or impossible to make, perhaps due to social barriers, economic constraints, or family feuds. In some instances, it was a consensual elopement disguised as a capture to circumvent parental objections or dowry negotiations. However, it could also be a violent act of coercion.

In contemporary societies, bridestealing is widely condemned and is illegal in most countries. It is considered a form of violence against women and a violation of human rights. Despite legal prohibitions, the practice continues in certain regions, often linked to deeply ingrained cultural traditions, poverty, and gender inequality. When it occurs, it can have severe psychological and social consequences for the abducted woman.
