Brailleweergave refers to the system of tactile writing and reading used by people who are visually impaired. It consists of raised dots arranged in a six-dot cell pattern. Each combination of dots represents a letter, number, punctuation mark, or even a contraction. Louis Braille, a French inventor, developed the system in the early 19th century, building upon an earlier, less efficient system.

The fundamental unit of braille is the braille cell, which is composed of two columns of three dots each. There are 64 possible combinations of these dots, including the blank cell. For example, the letter "a" is represented by a single dot in the top-left position, while the letter "b" uses the top-left and middle-left dots. Numbers are typically formed by a preceding number sign followed by the braille representation of the corresponding letter.

Brailleweergave is crucial for literacy and independence for many blind and visually impaired individuals. It allows for reading books, newspapers, and other written materials, as well as writing notes and documents. Braille can be produced using a braille writer, a specialized typewriter, or by embossing paper with a stylus and braille slate. Electronic braille displays can also translate digital text into braille dots in real-time. While technology has provided new tools for accessing information, braille remains a vital and irreplaceable skill for many.
