Braess

Braess is a term that can refer to a few different things, most notably a paradox related to traffic flow and a place in Germany.

The Braess paradox, named after the German physicist Dietrich Braess, describes a counterintuitive phenomenon in transportation networks. It states that adding capacity to a road network can paradoxically increase overall travel time for all drivers. This occurs when the new road causes a shift in driver behavior, leading to congestion in unexpected places. Drivers, acting in their own self-interest, will choose routes that appear to be fastest at any given moment. However, when a new road is introduced, it can lure drivers onto a route that, when taken by many, becomes slower for everyone than the original, less efficient route. This is because the new road might create bottlenecks or encourage traffic to concentrate in areas that cannot handle the increased volume, even though individually, each driver believes they are taking the optimal path. The paradox highlights the complexities of optimizing traffic flow and the potential for seemingly beneficial infrastructure improvements to have negative consequences.

Braess is also a municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the district of Gelsenkirchen and is part of the Ruhr metropolitan region. The area has a history of industrial development, particularly in coal mining and steel production, characteristic of the Ruhr area. Today, like many post-industrial regions, it is undergoing economic transformation.
