Bottomhung

Bottomhung refers to a type of window or door opening mechanism where the sash is hinged at the bottom and swings outwards from the top. This configuration is also known as an awning window or awning casement. The primary advantage of a bottomhung opening is its ability to be opened partially for ventilation while still providing protection from rain, as the opening sash acts as a canopy. This makes them suitable for installation in locations where direct rainfall might otherwise prevent ventilation, such as above sinks or in kitchens.

The mechanism typically involves a series of hinges along the bottom edge of the sash and a stay or arm that controls the degree to which the window can open. This stay can often be locked at various points to maintain the desired ventilation level. Bottomhung windows are frequently found in bathrooms, basements, and commercial buildings due to their functional benefits and security features. They can also be incorporated into larger window systems, such as casement windows, to create a combined opening style.
