Borhaltige

Borhaltige is a German adjective meaning "boron-containing." In chemistry, it is used to describe substances whose structures include boron atoms. The term encompasses both inorganic boron compounds, such as borates, boron oxides, and borides, and organic compounds in which a carbon–boron bond is present. The designation is independent of boron’s oxidation state or coordination.

Common examples of borhaltige compounds include inorganic species such as boric acid (H3BO3), borates (e.g., sodium tetraborate Na2B4O7·10H2O), boron oxides (B2O3), and metal borides. Organic borhaltige compounds include boranes (BH3; B2H6), organoboranes used in hydroboration, and boronic acids and boronate esters (R–B(OH)2, RB(OR')2).

Borhaltige compounds play a central role in synthesis and materials science. In organic chemistry, organoboron reagents enable hydroboration and cross-coupling reactions such as Suzuki–Miyaura. In industry and daily life, borates are used as glass formers, stabilizers, and flame retardants, while boron-containing fertilizers address plant boron nutrition. They also appear in ceramics, polymers, and advanced materials.

Safety and terminology: the term "borhaltig" is a descriptive category rather than a specific substance. Handling of boron compounds follows standard chemical hygiene; toxicity varies widely among compounds (boric acid is relatively low-toxicity, others can be more hazardous).
