Boomtown refers to a town that experiences rapid population growth and economic expansion over a relatively short period, often in response to the discovery of natural resources, the establishment of a major project, or the arrival of new trade and transportation links. Growth in a boomtown is typically driven by demand for housing, services, and labor, and can outpace existing infrastructure and governance, creating both opportunity and strain. The growth is frequently speculative, with rents and prices rising quickly and new businesses proliferating to serve the influx.

Classic boomtowns emerged during resource rushes in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the American West, but similar patterns have occurred worldwide with mining, oil, gas, rail, and technology-driven developments. A boomtown can attract workers, merchants, and investment, but is also susceptible to a bust when resources are depleted, prices fall, or investment dries up. The resulting downturn may leave behind ghost towns, abandoned properties, or communities that transition to stable, long-term economies.
