Boomlengte

Boomlengte is a Dutch term that translates to "boom length" or "boom span" and is primarily used in the context of historical naval architecture and shipbuilding. It refers to the length of the main spar or yard from which a ship's sail is set. This measurement was crucial for determining the sail area and, consequently, the ship's speed and maneuverability.

The boomlengte varied significantly depending on the type and size of the vessel, as well as the specific rig. Larger ships, such as warships or merchant galleons, would have much longer booms to support larger sails, enabling them to carry more cargo or achieve greater speed. Smaller vessels, like fishing boats or coastal traders, would have correspondingly shorter booms.
