Blinddarmentzündung

Blinddarmentzündung, also known as appendicitis, is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the appendix, a small, finger-like pouch attached to the large intestine. The exact cause of appendicitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a blockage in the appendix, often by stool, foreign bodies, or parasites. This blockage can lead to infection and inflammation.

The primary symptom of appendicitis is abdominal pain, which typically begins near the navel and then moves to the lower right side of the abdomen. This pain often worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing. Other common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, and a general feeling of being unwell. In some cases, diarrhea or constipation may also occur.

Appendicitis is considered a medical emergency. If left untreated, the inflamed appendix can rupture, leading to peritonitis, a serious infection of the abdominal lining. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, blood tests to check for signs of infection, and imaging tests such as ultrasound or CT scans. The standard treatment for appendicitis is surgical removal of the appendix, a procedure known as an appendectomy. This can be performed through open surgery or laparoscopically. Prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent complications.
