Biqarar

Biqarar is an adjective used in Urdu and Persian to describe a state of restlessness, unease, or impatience in a person or mood. In transliteration, it is often written as beqarār or beqarar, with the diacritic indicating the long vowel. In Urdu, بیقرار is the standard script.

Etymology: The word stems from bi- meaning “without” or “in a state of” and qarār meaning “stability” or “settlement.” Thus beqarar literally conveys “without stability.” Its usage spans emotional and situational contexts, from personal feelings to circumstances that lack repose.

Usage: In poetry and everyday language, beqarar conveys longing, anticipation, or distress. In Urdu ghazals and nazms it frequently appears to describe unrequited love, separation, or social longing. It can modify nouns (dil beqarar — an unsettled heart) or function as a predicate adjective describing a state of mind or situation.

Variant and transliteration: Besides beqarār, other common spellings include beqarar and biqarar. Accent marks vary by transliteration system, but pronunciation remains broadly similar.

Cross-linguistic notes: The term is widely used in Urdu and is understood in Persian- and Hindustani-speaking regions. It is part of a broader Persian-Urdu literary tradition where mood and emotional nuance are central.
