Biowaffenübereinkommen

The Biowaffenübereinkommen, also known as the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), is an international arms control treaty that prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and acquisition of biological and toxin weapons. Its full name is the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction. The treaty was opened for signature in 1972 and entered into force in 1975.

The BWC aims to prevent the use of biological agents and toxins for hostile purposes. It is a cornerstone of international efforts to control weapons of mass destruction. The convention does not include specific provisions for on-site verification or inspection, which has been a point of discussion and negotiation among member states. However, states parties are obligated to implement measures within their national territories to ensure compliance.

As of its last review, over 180 countries have ratified or acceded to the BWC. The treaty’s effectiveness relies on the political will of its member states to uphold its provisions and to cooperate in addressing potential violations. Periodic review conferences are held to assess the implementation of the convention and to consider any necessary developments or improvements. The BWC remains a vital instrument in the global effort to prevent biological warfare and promote international security.
