Biopakendeid is a portmanteau word combining "bio" (referring to biological or natural origins) and "packaging" (materials used to enclose and protect products). It describes packaging materials that are derived from renewable biological resources, such as plants, microorganisms, or animal byproducts, rather than fossil fuels. The core concept behind biopakendeid is to offer an alternative to conventional petroleum-based packaging, aiming for reduced environmental impact.

These materials can be biodegradable, meaning they can be broken down by microorganisms in a natural environment over a specific period. However, not all biopakendeid is biodegradable, and not all biodegradable packaging is biopakendeid. Some biopakendeid is designed for industrial composting, requiring specific conditions to break down effectively. Others are designed to be recyclable within existing infrastructure or even compostable at home.

The development of biopakendeid is driven by growing concerns about plastic waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and the depletion of finite fossil fuel resources.
