It refers to a proposed class of fundamental biomolecules that could form the basis of life in non-terrestrial or alternative chemistries. The term emphasizes function over a fixed chemical constituency, and it is not tied to any particular real-world substrate.

In concept, biomoleculelor cover several functional groups analogous to the roles of nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and cofactors in Earth biology, but without prescribing specific molecular backbones. They can be informational polymers that store heritable data, catalytic molecules that speed chemical reactions, and structural or membrane-forming components that organize cells.
