Biokovo

Biokovo is a mountain range located in Dalmatia, Croatia, along the Adriatic coast. It is the third highest mountain range in Croatia and forms a significant natural barrier between the coastal region and the hinterland. The highest peak in the Biokovo range is Sveti Jure, standing at 1,762 meters (5,781 feet). The mountain is characterized by its steep slopes, rocky terrain, and a distinctive Mediterranean climate.

The landscape of Biokovo is a mosaic of bare rock, sparse vegetation, and scattered forests. Due to its altitude and exposure to winds, the flora and fauna are adapted to harsh conditions. Several endemic species can be found in the area, showcasing the unique biodiversity of the region. The geological formations are primarily karst, with numerous caves, sinkholes, and rock formations.

Biokovo Nature Park was established to protect its natural beauty, geological features, and rich biodiversity. The park is a popular destination for hiking and mountaineering, offering challenging trails and panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands. Access to the park is facilitated by a paved road that leads to the summit of Sveti Jure, providing a scenic drive and access to various viewpoints. The natural park also plays a role in regional water management, influencing rainfall patterns and water sources for the coastal communities.
