Bioelektrik, also referred to as bioelectric phenomena, is the study of electrical processes in living organisms. It covers the generation, propagation, and interpretation of electrical signals in cells and tissues. The core ideas include membrane potential, action potentials, ion gradients, and electrochemical signaling across membranes.

Cells maintain electrical differences across membranes using ion pumps and channels, such as the Na+/K+ ATPase and various voltage- and ligand-gated channels. The resting membrane potential arises from differential ion permeability and active transport, while action potentials are rapid, transient changes in voltage that travel along neurons and muscle fibers. These signals enable processes from sensory perception and motor control to heart rhythm and glandular activity.

Bioelectric signaling is not limited to animals. In plants and some microbes, voltage changes regulate development, wound responses, and growth. The field combines physiology with electrophysiology, biophysics, and bioengineering, often employing intracellular microelectrodes, patch-clamp techniques, extracellular electrodes, and voltage-sensitive dyes or genetically encoded indicators to measure electrical activity.

Applications of bioelektrik include bioelectronic medicine and neural interfaces. Electrical stimulation therapies, such as deep brain stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and peripheral nerve stimulation, leverage bioelectric principles to modulate neural activity. Advances in regenerative medicine explore how controlled electric fields guide tissue repair and development. Ethical and safety considerations accompany clinical translation, particularly concerning long-term stimulation and device integration.
