These credits represent a quantifiable unit of biodiversity gain. For example, a credit might represent the restoration of a hectare of a specific type of habitat, the reintroduction of a certain species, or an improvement in water quality that benefits aquatic ecosystems. The value and nature of these credits are determined by methodologies that measure and verify the biodiversity outcomes achieved.

The goal of biodiversity credit systems is to channel private sector finance towards conservation and restoration efforts. Developers purchase credits to meet regulatory requirements or voluntary sustainability commitments.
