Bioakkumulálódni means to accumulate in living organisms. This process occurs when a substance, such as a toxic chemical, is absorbed by an organism at a rate faster than it can be metabolized or excreted. As a result, the concentration of the substance increases within the organism's tissues over time. Bioaccumulation can happen through various routes, including ingestion of contaminated food or water, inhalation, or absorption through the skin.

The substances that tend to bioaccumulate are often persistent in the environment and resistant to degradation. Examples include certain pesticides, heavy metals like mercury and lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). As these substances move up the food chain, their concentrations can become increasingly magnified, a process known as biomagnification. This means that organisms at higher trophic levels, such as top predators, can accumulate much higher concentrations of these toxins than organisms at lower levels.
